In the Northern Alps, visibility will be somewhat better this morning, it will remain mostly dry, but snowfall will set in during the afternoon. By tomorrow morning, 15-25 cm of fresh fallen snow is anticipated. Temperatures will drop: at 2000m, -3 degrees; at 3000m, -7 degrees. Winds will shift from easterly to N/NW, blow at moderate to brisk strength. Snow Layering In the regions of southern East Tirol there has been 20-40 cm of fresh fallen snow registered over the last 24 hours. Potential bed surfaces for avalanches are the ground-level layers on shady slopes above 2100m. In addition, loose powder snow which now has drifts deposited atop it could also release (this danger applies throughout Tirol above 2500m). In inneralpine regions, deeply embedded weak layers of faceted crystals still threaten above 2300 m on steep, shady slopes. Avalanche Danger In southern East Tirol, considerable danger prevails in general, conditions are unfavourable. Since yesterday there has been up to 40 cm of snowfall amidst sometimes strong velocity winds. Above the treeline, the very steep slopes are massively wind-loaded with new drifts. In addition, on very steep, shady slopes above 2100m, slab avalanches can in isolated cases trigger spontaneously this morning, especially where snowfall has been heavy. Elsewhere, relatively favourable conditions reign in Tirol. In northern regions the danger is generally moderate, below the treeline often low. In the remaining regions the danger above 2500m is frequently considerable, below that altitude moderate, below the treeline low. The major peril stems from the freshly formed drifts, particularly near ridgelines on very steep slopes. Very steep shady slopes in the inneralpine regions above 2300 m also demand high caution; especially by large additional loading, medium-sided slab avalanches could trigger, particularly where the snowpack is shallow. In southern East Tirol and in the western regions of North Tirol where snowfall has been heaviest, gliding avalanches are possible.
